The Latest News…

So here’s the latest news on the world of Katrina.

Our Parish, Jefferson, Reopened Monday to let people back to their homes to check it out from 6pm to 6am daily. After Thursday, the parish will be locked down again from anywhere from 2-5 weeks we’re hearing. We were thinking of going back, but we’re about 7 hours away right now (under normal traffic). The 2 problems that concerned us is that there was a 20 mile long line to get into the parish the first 2 days. It took a relative of Donna’s, who was only 45 minutes out, 6 hours to drive that. That’s like 12 hours to get in, not to mention to get what we need and get out and drive 7 hours BACK. Then there’s the whole no gas problem.

So…. we decided not to try and go back this week and will stick it out here in Houston till we get more news.

We applied for FEMA assistance the other day but got denied for anything. Probably because we rent we think. We also went to the Red Cross to get these debit cards we heard they were giving out. After waiting in line their for 30 minutes (along with the 1.5hr roundtrip drive), we got to the table only to find out they had none. Gee… thanks for telling us that before we got in line :/ They gave us a number to call to check when they’ll get these cards.

We do have good news though. Some former coworkers of Donna have company near Houston and she was able to contact them and get a little temp job with them. This will help with keeping some kind of income flowing in. Won’t be much but it’ll help.

Her job is still clueless on what they wanna do. Last we heard they were talking about relocating the office to Baton Rouge for *6-8 MONTHS*! WTH!? We do have a home to go back to and hopefully my job in New Orleans.

Speaking of which, I’ve tried calling, emailing, and Texting my boss and have yet to hear back. So I’m totally clueless on my job.

Also been trying to contact our apartment manager company to see if they’re in town and maybe checking all the units. From satellite pictures we’ve seen, our house is there still with a roof. Probably was flooded (don’t how high), but no idea if any doors or windows were broken.

But anyway, that’s the latest news we have. Not really much different than before except for Donna. It’s just driving us crazy not really knowing anything and not being able to create a plan without totally ditching our lives and jobs in New Orleans.

Also, I just wanna give a huge thanks to everyone that has donated to the paypal fund. It’s great to see the support from the community and all.

And a HUGE thanks to Michael and Shelly for giving us a home while we figure all this crap out. Thanks yall!

I think most of us are happy to help. It gives us the feeling we’re doing something other than just donating to charity. It puts a real face on it. Like usual, let me know what I can do, if anything.

I will look for some temp work that can be done remotely via laptop. No promises. I agree with Haviart 100%

I was trying to donate to the cause, but there are some kind of server errors.
You may not remember, back in the days when FoodTV had an Iron Chef chat room, you were the one who suggested I start a website to share my Iron Chef recipes. Stephanie Masamura also made some very helpful suggestions. We would be glad to help out in any way we can. We are originally from Houston, but left when we got tired of the Gulf coming up to our porch. We live in Murfreesboro, Tennessee now where there are never any hurricanes. The weather is usually perfect. Our home phone is 615-848-1860, my cell is 615- 512-2631. I work for Dell and we are currently hiring. Please let us know any way we can help.
    Best regards,
